Sighted Moon News Letter 5843-038
The 30th day of the Eighth Month 5843 years after creation

November 11, 2007

Shalom, Brethren,

New Moon Sighting

We have just received the following report from Israel.

Karaite Korner Newsletter #311

New Moon Report
November 2007
Ninth Biblical Month

On Sunday November 11, 2007 observers across Israel looked for the new moon but it was not sighted due to heavy cloud coverage. The moon had 2.65% illumination and 41 minutes lagtime and therefore would have been visible from Israel had there been no clouds.

Happy New Moon!
Rosh Chodesh Sameach!

Nehemia Gordon
Jerusalem, Israel

Please note. Mr Gordon is not sighting the moon in this report. He is going by calculations. The Moon was not sighted, there for the month is 30 days in length by default. November the 11th is the 29th day of the Eighth month. Because no moon was sighted, this means that November the 12th is going to be the 30th day of the Eighth month. Then Monday evening at sunset will begin the 1st day of the Ninth month. The Ninth month in Latin is November. Strange how this works.

As no Holy Days are in the ninth month this is not a huge deal. But it does set up a precedent as to how you are to determine when the Holy Days are to be determined. It is also important in the fact that if we have 6 month of not being able to sight the moon that we could have a Passover 6 days later based on the addition of 1 day each month due to the moon not being sighted.

This is what happened last year. No moon was sighted all winter until the month of Aviv.
So now is a good time for you to decide how you are going to reckon your months. Either by sighting or calculations.
I will continue to go by sighting.

In support of this I would suggest further reading of this article at titled Ezekiels 30 days.
